I know Troy Ervin. He is a husband, father, pastor, businessman, musician, basketball player. coach and an avid runner. Wherever Troy goes, he takes time out to first pray and stay close to God. On the campus of the Ivy League Dartmouth College, a group of students and alumni embarked on a mission to intellectually and spiritually pursue truth. They believe that faith in God and reason can be integrated into everyday life. From that premise they created the Eleazer Wheelock Society. The group’s purpose is to engage the world with Godly wisdom to inform and enrich each other.
As an invited guest to the organization’s 2018 conference, I was asked to provide my professional observations as a journalist for a leading news organization and my personal thoughts and reason for my faith in God. The organization chose a striking theme for its conference; What Is Your Why? To further define the point of the event, the students used a quote from the famous British author, Lewis Carroll, who wrote; “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”
The very idea that students on the campus of one of the top colleges in the country are seeking Godly wisdom to understand why they exist is encouraging. It is evidence that all of us throughout the world have a burning desire to know why we exist? Who we are? What are we here for? Where are we going? When and How will we get there?
Mankind is thirsty and hungry for knowledge. We are in a constant pursuit of value and meaning. In his book, “Unsinkable Significance, “ Troy Ervin brilliantly and emotionally merges knowledge and wisdom, reason and faith to provide answers to the questions you have about your very existence.
